How to answer “Tell me about yourself”

It's almost always the first question, and it sets the tone for the whole interview. A strong answer takes about a minute, covers three things and ends by pointing at the role you're interviewing for.

Updated October 31, 2026

In short
  • Use present → past → why this role.
  • Aim for 150–190 words, about 60–75 seconds.
  • Pick one or two achievements that match the job description, with real numbers.
  • End with why this role, not with your hobbies.

The structure

  1. 1Present: your current role and the one thing you're known for. “I'm a backend engineer at Acme, where I own our payments APIs.”
  2. 2Past: one or two experiences that led here, chosen because they match the job description.
  3. 3Why this role: connect what you've done to what they need.

Example

Senior backend engineer, about 170 words
I'm a backend engineer with six years of experience, most recently at Acme, where I own the payments APIs. A big part of my work there is reliability: I moved our payment retries to idempotent requests, which cut duplicate charges to near zero, and I brought p99 latency down about 40% by fixing our database access patterns. Before Acme, I spent three years at a logistics startup building the order pipeline, which is where I learned to design for things failing halfway. What draws me to this role is that you're scaling payments into new markets. That's the kind of correctness and reliability work I enjoy most, and I'd like to do it at a larger scale.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Reciting your resume line by line. They've read it, so pick highlights.
  • Starting with your childhood or your degree when you have years of work experience.
  • Inflating. If the role asks for eight years and you have six, say six and show scope instead. See answering when you don't meet the years.
  • Running long. Past two minutes, you're losing them.
